The small mountain towns of Boulder County are not unfamiliar with unusual road names. There’s Sugar Loaf’s Wild Tiger Road and Crisman’s Escape Route.

But, there is one main intersection in Gold Hill which connects Main Street with the oddities Lick Skillet Road and Horsfal Street, begging the question: How did those roads get their names?

It was the spring of 1859, and explorers in Boulder County had already found gold on Gold Hill that January. David Horsfal, exploring the area, found gold in a new spot which would become the Horsfal Mine, named after him. The road, which turns into Sunshine Canyon Drive — also signed as Boulder County Road 52 — would follow suit.
