Americans who use the Supplemental Nutrition Aid Program will not receive the federally funded grocery shopping support next month, as the federal government shutdown leaves the state- and county-administered program short on cash.
Mesa County said in a press release Thursday that it was instructed by federal officials to suspend all issuance of SNAP benefits beginning in November.
“In Mesa County specifically, this will affect over 11,000 families,” said Mesa County Department of Human Services Executive Director Jill Calvert. “This really is a hardship for these families, and these individuals.”
Calvert said the county would continue to accept and process applications for nutrition aid next month, but would have to wait until the shutdown ends to submit any paperwork to federal offici
