Q: Should we be concerned with the split in the trunk of the Frontyard Linden we purchased and had professionally planted in 2022, and the split appeared two years later? A: Frontyard Linden is a wonderful cultivar of American Linden, becoming a large shade or boulevard tree. Its symmetrical, rounded shape gives dense shade and is fully winter hardy for Zones 3 and 4. Its shape, when young, is broadly pyramidal, becoming rounded with age.

From your photos, the tree seems to be doing well. It would be preferable, though, if that split were not there. Such wounds can come from animal damage, winter injury, or other sources. Some tree types, like maple
