NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The Virginia Zoo announced the birth of a new southern three-banded armadillo pup Friday.
Virginia Zoo said the new pup was born on Aug. 31 to parents Izel and Vigo, which are a part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Southern Three-banded Armadillo Species Survival Plan (SSP).
Three-banded armadillos are native to eastern Bolivia, southwestern Brazil, the Gran Chaco region of Paraguay and northern and central Argentina, being one of only 25 armadillo species that can fully curl up into a ball.
The sex of the baby armadillo has not been identified yet, as keepers only handle the pup once a week to weigh them. In addition, keepers can not fully analyze the pup as it normally is completely curled up.
