Most long-running shows stumble somewhere and have a moment when they fall into a rut. Other shows don't have this problem, with most typically being made by HBO. When we think of shows with no bad seasons, we think of the brutal honesty of The Wire , the surreal existentialism and elegance of The Leftovers , and even the ruthless satire of Veep . Each of these shows proves that staying great can be harder than starting great.

The showrunners of the six HBO shows with no bad seasons didn't compromise on their vision, but allowed the narrative to take them to the same places as they were taking it. They mastered the art of starting and staying great, and you can start watching these series without worrying you'll experience a rut.
