The tax, part of the UN International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) “Net-Zero Framework,” would have penalized ships for carbon emissions in an effort to reach global neutrality by 2050. U.S. officials warned the plan would dramatically raise shipping costs and consumer prices, leading the IMO to postpone the vote for one year.
