It was the powerful speech of 17-year-old Tia Scott at Saturday morning’s Telethon breakfast that tugged at the heartstrings and inspired those attending to give their all over the 26-hour mega-fundraiser.
Diagnosed with osteosarcoma bone cancer at just 12 years old, Tia has endured 755 blood tests, 188 scans, 13 surgeries and many cycles of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiotherapy and more.
Her first major surgery to remove a tumour lasted 16 hours.
“Before that surgery, they told me there was a possibility that I may never walk again — but here I am,” she said.
“I’ve discovered what bravery feels like at 2am in the emergency room or at the hospital on my birthday. Bravery isn’t being unafraid, it’s doing things whilst you’re afraid.”
