A 17-mile stretch of the 5 Freeway was shut down for about an hour, causing a traffic nightmare near Camp Pendleton, ahead of a military event with live artillery. Though both sides of the freeway are reopening, more closures are expected when the event gets underway around 1:30 p.m.
