Most days, Kayla McNeill teaches year 5 and 6 students.
But next week, she'll be leading a team of citizen scientists — tasked with spending 20 minutes outside taking note of all the birds they see.
Ms McNeill's students on the NSW Central Coast are among thousands of people across the country taking part in this year's Aussie Bird Count.
The annual event, run by conservation charity BirdLife Australia, encourages people to take stock of birds in their local area in a set amount of time.
Over the course of a week, participants log their sightings through an app, with the data providing a national snapshot of where certain species live.
