The Home Ministry has ordered a probe into the Ladakh violence last month that killed four and injured at least 90 and said it is open for dialogue.

Former Supreme Court judge Justice BS Chauhan will conduct an "impartial inquiry" into the violence, it said in a release.

The people of Ladakh have been demanding statehood and inclusion into the Sixth Schedule to gain administrative autonomy for over five years. The BJP government had promised the Sixth Schedule during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Days after the protest, the government arrested climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been advocating for peaceful protest and was considered the voice of the people of Ladakh, on charges of suspicious connection to Pakistan.
