SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- The Orange needed to show improvement coming off of the bye week and through the first 29 minutes, SU did. It looked like Pitt was going to head into the break with a slim 10-7 lead, but in the final seconds of the half, Kenny Johnson returned a punt 68 yards for a stunning touchdown. The Panthers now lead 17-7 at the half.
After SU went three-and-out on the opening drive, Pittsburgh went down and scored a touchdown on its first possession. Freshman quarterback Mason Heintschel escaped the pressure and scrambled 36 yards for the opening score.
Syracuse got on the board late in the first quarter, thanks in large part to its defense. Davien Kerr picked off a pass around midfield and returned it to the Pitt 12. Two plays later, Rickie Collins found Darrell Gill,
