FISHERS, Ind. — The Toledo Walleye opened their 2025-26 season with a 4-1 victory over the Indy Fuel on Saturday in a game where all five goals came on special teams.

Denis Smirnov found the back of the net twice on the man advantage for Toledo and Darby Llewellyn and Nolan Moyle both netted shorthanded goals.

After the first 35 minutes of the game passed without any offense, the Walleye found themselves facing a 10-minute power play after Colin Swoyer was assessed a match penalty for an illegal check to the head.

But instead of falling behind, the Walleye took the lead instead on Llewllyn’s goal.

Smirnov then increased the lead to 3-0 in the third period with a pair of power-play goals that came just over a minute apart.
