DONAHUE, Iowa (KWQC) - On May 23 at 5:30 p.m., Katie Fossum received a phone call about her son Kaoni.
“Through the genetics, they found out that he had the Hypomyelinating Leukodystrophy Type 10,” said Katie Fossum, Kaoni’s mom.
The disease affects his brain development, and it’s so rare that only 20 cases have been confirmed worldwide.
“The doctor literally told me that she was on Google because she had never heard of it before,” Fossum said.
Medical expenses add up
Kaoni has weekly therapy for physical, occupational, and speech needs. At home, he uses different equipment that helps with tasks like sitting during a bath and standing up.
