In 1951, the United Nations Refugee Convention developed an asylum treaty that was designed to protect the refugees from Eastern Europe. Later, this treaty was extended to cover the rest of the world. The world has changed since 1951. Bloody conflicts are spreading, travel across continents is easier and cheaper and the gap in quality of life between developed countries and others has grown. The current asylum system has failed to deal with these realities.
