Colorado State has dismissed head coach Jay Norvell midway through his fourth season, announced on Sunday. A staff meeting revealed Norvell’s departure, following the Rams’ 2-5 record after Saturday’s loss to Hawai’i, concluding Norvell’s overall record at 18-26.

Athletic director John Weber stated the program’s need for a change in leadership to compete at the highest level as they prepare to join the Pac-12 Conference. The search for a new head coach begins immediately, with Tyson Summers stepping in as interim head coach.

Norvell, 62, previously coached at Nevada, achieving a 33-26 record with four consecutive bowl appearances. He was the first Black head football coach in CSU history, signing a five-year deal in December 2021, and will receive a $1.5 million buyout.
