WASHINGTON — Two days after Americans protested Trump administration policies at nationwide “No Kings Day” rallies, congressional Republicans doubled down on their claims that the Democrats are beholden to radical elements of their party.

On Day 20 of a government shutdown with no end in sight, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said the rallies were about “politics” and “spectacle.”

“The irony was very clear. They called it the ‘No Kings’ rally,” Johnson said during a news conference at the Capitol on Monday. “What we’ve pointed out over and over was if President Trump was a king, the government would be open.”
