The Alien franchise produced a sequel to James Cameron's Aliens years before David Fincher directed Alien 3 , and in many ways it is the follow-up fans wanted from the third film, but didn't get. Alien 3 took the series in a controversial direction , one that could have been avoided if the movie had adapted Dark Horse Comics' 1988 Aliens sequel.
