The Alien franchise produced a sequel to James Cameron's Aliens years before David Fincher directed Alien 3 , and in many ways it is the follow-up fans wanted from the third film, but didn't get. Alien 3 took the series in a controversial direction , one that could have been avoided if the movie had adapted Dark Horse Comics' 1988 Aliens sequel.

Aliens was written by Mark Verheiden, with art by Mark A. Nelson. The six-issue series was released by Dark Horse in 1988-1989. The story focuses on Newt and Hicks, in stark contrast to their gruesome Alien 3 fate.
