A multinational weapons manufacturer backed by the Australian government has been "directly linked" to a human rights violation after one of its missiles was found on an Aboriginal heritage site.

The anti-aircraft missile manufactured by Saab was found by brothers and Kokatha traditional owners Andrew and Robert Starkey in January 2021, while monitoring a heritage site for which they had custodial responsibility.

Andrew Starkey said the brothers discovered the 1.3-metre missile at Lake Hart near the Woomera rocket range, 475 kilometres north-west of Adelaide.

He said the missile was located 100 metres from an early Aboriginal structure, prompting the brothers to alert the Department of Defence.
