GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A West Michigan man who posted online threats to kill President Donald Trump was sentenced Monday, Oct. 20, to 18 months in federal prison.
Richard James Spring, who lives in Comstock Park, just outside of Grand Rapids, wrote: “I promise I will make sure he is assassinated before his first f------ year,” and threatened to rape a family member in front of Trump.
Spring’s attorney said he was caught up in the national political divide and wasn’t capable of harming the president or his family.
“It’s been a very unique, unique case during a unique time in our country slash society,” attorney Donald Sappanos told U.S. District Judge Jane Beckering in Grand Rapids.
