DANVILLE, Va. — The man accused of dousing Danville City Councilman Lee Vogler with gasoline and setting him on fire has asked to plead not guilty by reason of insanity and undergo a mental competency evaluation , court documents show.

Shotsie Buck-Hayes is charged with first-degree attempted murder in connection with the July attack at Showcase Magazine, where Vogler worked. The councilman suffered burns over more than half of his body.

A Danville Circuit Court judge granted Buck-Hayes’ request and ordered a psychological examination to determine whether he is mentally competent to stand trial.
