An Amazon Web Services outage knocked out popular apps and websites for hours, snarling everything from shopping and streaming to messaging and payments.

AWS customers around the world reported errors as a failure in Amazon’s cloud disrupted connectivity and app launches starting just before 3 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20.

Amazon said some services continued to see increased error rates into the afternoon and that recovery was ongoing by late day.

By midafternoon, AWS reported early signs of improvement in parts of its EC2 service and confirmed the incident also affected Amazon.com and its own support operations.

The disruption took many sites and apps offline for hours and underscored how much of the internet relies on a few big cloud providers.
