SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Springfield Pilot and New Revenue Subcommittee presented their findings on new revenue sources for the city during a recent meeting, proposing an expansion of the PILOT program for non-profits.
City Councilor Victor Davila, who led the meeting, suggested that more non-profit entities should contribute fees through the Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) program. This initiative aims to generate additional revenue for Springfield by having non-profits such as hospitals and colleges, which typically do not pay property taxes, voluntarily agree to pay a fee.
"The committee found that the city of Springfield has 15 pilot agreements and they received less than 300,000 dollars a year in pilot payments," Councilor Davila said.
