BUCKSPORT -- An animal shelter that serves several communities across Penobscot county has launched a fundraising campaign for a new facility to replace their current one, an upgrade town officials say is long overdue.

"We have had these two sheds probably for about 50 years or so, probably a little less," said Autumn Bishop, Animal Control Officer for the town of Bucksport.

Those sheds are the current home of the Bucksport Animal Shelter.

"There's so much more that we could do that we're just unable to do with these facilities," said Luke Chiavelli, Code Enforcement Officer for the town of Bucksport.

The shelter is currently helping to meet the needs of nine surrounding communities, but they are challenged with improper insulation, lack of plumbing and space issues.
