Ivoted Monday in the municipal election. Typically I now vote in the advance polls so I can be available to write about activities on election day, but this year I was out of town.

The process for voting devised by the city was convoluted and overly bureaucratic. It took me nearly a half-hour to get my ballots. I filled them out and deposited the in the ballot boxes in around on minute.

Never before in any election — local, provincial or federal — has it taken me so long to get my ballots before I could cast them.

I had to show ID to get into the school whose gymnasium was being used as a polling station. Then I had to stand in a line to show ID again, this time to register by filling out a form with my name, address and date of birth.
