PORTLAND, Maine — Cumberland County commissioners voted on whether to amend its contract with U.S. Marshal Prison Operations to exclude Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Monday night.

The item failed to pass in a 3-2 vote. A motion to reconsider was brought forth, but was tabled for 30 days.

During the meeting, one commissioner said ICE should not be treated as a legitimate agency because of tactics she believes violate the law.

Another commissioner argued the county lacks authority to deny ICE the use of the Cumberland County jail, saying doing so would shift the financial burden from the federal government to local taxpayers.
