Kauai police say a man has died kayaking in waters near Lucy Wright Beach Park over the weekend.

Police said at about 6 p.m. Saturday, first responders were dispatched to the shoreline near Waimea River after a floating body was reported. Kauai firefighters brought the man to shore and immediately began lifesaving measures, but were unable to resuscitate him.

The man was taken to Wilcox Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police have identified the man as Angel Tapia, 60, with no permanent address.

Witnesses said Tapia may have been impaired when his kayak was capsized by a wave offshore.

An autopsy has been requested to determine the official cause of death and any contributing factors. Police said foul play is not suspected at this time.
