DULUTH — Jesse James Kowalczak told a court Monday that he doesn’t have a full recollection of the events of May 13, 2022.

However, he did not dispute reports that he was driving at roughly double the speed limit in “extremely foggy” conditions when he T-boned another car, killing Leah Joy Sarko and injuring her 11-year-old son.

“The last thing I remember is pretty much just a freeze frame of her in front of me,” he said.

Kowalczak, now 21, of Midway Township, pleaded guilty to a count of criminal vehicular homicide at a hearing inside a crowded Duluth courtroom. He’s also facing a civil lawsuit from Sarko’s family.
