A 42-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of his 80-year-old father in Oshawa. The incident occurred on October 16, when police responded to reports of an altercation near Simcoe Street South and McGrigor Street. Officers discovered Ibrahim Bala suffering from severe injuries. Despite emergency responders' efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The accused, Sohaib Bala, was arrested on Monday at a residence near Thornton Road North and Adelaide Avenue West. Police stated that he was taken into custody without incident and is currently awaiting a bail hearing. Ibrahim Bala was found outside a home close to the Oshawa Islamic Centre, where he was known as a respected member of the community. The Islamic Centre released a statement describing him as a “very dear community brother.” City councillor Derek Giberson noted that Ibrahim had lived in Oshawa since the 1970s and was known for welcoming newcomers to the city. Constable Nicholas Gluckstein of the Durham police emphasized the impact of Ibrahim's death on the community. “Everybody that we’ve spoken to has said nothing but amazing things about this individual, and he was well known, especially at the Islamic centre,” he said. Investigators have classified the case as a homicide and are collaborating with leaders from the Islamic Centre to ensure transparency and respect throughout the investigation. The community is mourning the loss of a man described as a father, husband, and beloved figure in Oshawa.
