The Queensland LNP government has signed an agreement with Indigenous mayors to give them direct access to state cabinet, but has rejected suggestions it's akin to the failed Voice to Parliament.
The accord, signed at the Local Government Association of Queensland annual conference on the Gold Coast on Monday, will see cabinet ministers meet with the state's 17 First Nations councils once a year.
Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Fiona Simpson said it will allow Indigenous leaders to raise important issues for remote and rural areas, such as housing, job creation and water access, without having to go through layers of bureaucracy.
