“The Largest Draft Horse Auction in America,” Waverly’s annual Fall Horse Sale, was preparing to open this week, reported a front-page story in the Oct. 21, 1975, issue of the Bremer County Independent.
Auctioneer-sale founder Arnold Hexom expected it to be the biggest draft horse sale ever held here, according to the article.
“Hexom has predicted previous sales as being ‘the biggest’ and this week appeared to have the advance consignments to justify this latest prediction,” the story reads.
He expected a total of 500-550 draft horses along with 300 saddle horses and the largest advance consignment yet received for horse equipment.
