Barnaby Joyce has affirmed his commitment to serving out the remainder of his term as the New England member, but whether it's under the National Party banner remains to be seen.

The one-time deputy prime minister sent shockwaves through the political world over the weekend when he announced he wouldn't be recontesting his seat amid a breakdown in his relationship with the party's leadership.

Since then, speculation has been rife about his next move, and whether he will even stay on with the party until his term is finished.

Addressing the media in front of his Tamworth office on Tuesday, October 21, he was asked if he plans to serve the two-and-a-half years remaining in his current term as a National Party member.

Mr Joyce said he couldn't "make any guarantees there".
