A man who died while hiking along a popular trail in Maryland last week was identified as a beloved physical education teacher.

Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) confirmed the death of Todd Funkhouser, 53, who taught at Sugarland Elementary School in Sterling, Va., in a statement shared with PEOPLE.

“Todd was a cherished member of the LCPS family, having taught in various schools for the last 30 years,” LCPS spokesperson Dan Adams said in a statement
