MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- A baby is reportedly recovering after nearly drowning in a bathtub in Merced County.

Reports came in from Harding and Walnut Road in Turlock Monday afternoon about a baby who wasn't breathing.

The Merced County Sheriff's Office says deputies rushed to the location where they say a child was in a tub with running water and it's believed the baby began choking.

"The mother attended to the baby and then the baby went unconscious, in a panic, the mother was unable to locate her cell phone and left the residence," Merced County Sheriff's Captain Aaron Rosenberg said.

The Sheriff's Office says the mother went to get help at a business and 911 was called.

First responders performed CPR resuscitating the baby before the child was rushed to the hospital.
