EL CENTRO — As National Teen Driver Safety Week begins (October 19–25), the El Centro Police Department is encouraging parents and caregivers to discuss the rules of the road and safe driving habits with their teens before handing over the car keys.
Car crashes remain a leading cause of death for teens ages 15–18 in the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2,611 people were killed in crashes involving teen drivers in 2023. In California alone, 465 fatalities involved drivers aged 20 or younger, accounting for nearly 11.5% of all traffic deaths statewide.
