Disability and ill-health have pushed the number of young people who are not in education, employment or training close to one million, a new report has found.
The number of 16- to 24-year-olds not in education, employment or training ( NEET ) has risen to 940,000, up 195,000 in just two years.
According to damning new figures from the Resolution Foundation , this is the highest level since 2011 and close to the one-million mark last tipped in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis.
Poor health and disability are the biggest causes of the rise, said Louise Murphy, senior economist at the think tank.
“The number of young people who are neither earning nor learning has risen sharply in recent years and is now nearing one million,” she said.
