The Illinois Department of Insurance has asked insurance companies to offer relief to policyholders affected by the federal government shutdown.
According to a community announcement, the department has requested that insurers take steps to assist federal employees who may face financial hardship during the lapse in federal funding.
The shutdown, which began Oct. 1, affects more than 153,000 Illinoisans who are federal employees.
The department has asked insurers to temporarily halt policy cancellations and nonrenewals for missed premium payments. Coverage should continue for at least 30 days or until the shutdown ends, whichever is longer. If employees have not received back pay after the shutdown, the department recommends extending coverage for another 30 days, according to the annou
