India’s outward remittances for education abroad fell 23.8 per cent year-on-year in August, a month that coincides with the academic cycle in US universities.
As per data released by the RBI in its August monthly bulletin, outward remittances under the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) for ‘studies abroad’ stood at $0.32 billion in August 2025, a fall from $0.42 billion in August 2024.
Businessline analysis of LRS data shows that at $0.32 billion, this is the lowest monthly remittance figure for August since 2017, when it was $0.24 billion.
