UPDATE: A house fire that left multiple firefighters injured early Tuesday, Oct. 21 in Bergen County was deemed not suspicious, authorities asid in an update.

The two-alarm blaze at 29 Ellen Court in Hillsdale broke out at 3:46 a.m., according to Hillsdale Fire Chief William Farrell. Responders found a back deck fire extending into the attic with no entrapment, Farrell said.

According to Farrell, a brief loss of water inside the building caused a flashover, forcing the firefighters to evacuate.

“One mayday was transmitted,” Farrell said. He added that he requested a second alarm, and the mayday was “promptly cleared and all members were accounted for.”

While EMS attended to the injured members, crews quickly knocked down the fire, which was “deemed under control after extensive overhaul,” Farrell said.

According to Deputy Chief of Detectives Jeff Angermeyer of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, multiple firefighters from Hillsdale assisting agencies suffered non-life-threatening burns and other minor injuries. They were transported to area hospitals for evaluation and treatment. No residents were injured, and the firefighters’ injuries were not considered serious.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, under the direction of Chief Matthew Finck, and the Hillsdale Police Department, under the direction of Chief Travis Woods, are investigating the cause of the fire with assistance from the Hillsdale Fire Marshal,
