GRAND FORKS — UND head football coach Eric Schmidt hasn't needed any fiery halftime speeches lately.

Through three games of Missouri Valley Football Conference play, the No. 8-ranked Fighting Hawks (5-2 overall, 3-0 MVFC) have been in a strong position at halftime.

UND led 14-0 at halftime at Northern Iowa, 28-7 at the Alerus Center against Youngstown State and 28-0 at Saluki Stadium in Carbondale against Southern Illinois.

On the season, UND is outscoring opponents 167 to 37 in the first half — including an incredible 90-14 advantage in the second quarter.

As a result, the Hawks have had the opportunity to play young players and backups late in games.
