India on Tuesday announced that its technical mission in Kabul will be upgraded to the status of a full embassy, as part of its engagement with Taliban and to deepen bilateral engagement with Afghanistan.
The decision follows External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s recent meeting with Afghan counterpart Amir Khan Muttaqi, during which he indicated India’s intention to enhance its diplomatic presence in Kabul.
India had withdrawn its embassy staff from Kabul after the Taliban took control in August 2021. In June 2022, India reinstated a “technical team” to maintain a diplomatic foothold in the Afghan capital. The latest upgrade elevates that mission to full embassy status, headed by a diplomat in the rank of Charge d’Affaires.
