HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) -- The 13th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season formed Tuesday morning in the Caribbean. Hurricane Hunters investigated an area of distubrance and found evidence that the storms had organized into a tropical system.

Tropical Storm Melissa developed in the Caribbean and has maximum winds of 50 mph. The system is continuing to track west at 14 mph. Melissa will slow its progression before strengthening to a hurricane later this week.

Melissa is forecast to bring heavy rain and strong surf to Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica. A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Jamaica, and a Hurricane Watch has been issued for the western coast of the Dominican Republic.
