2024-25 season series: Lakers won 3-1

The Dubs roll into Tinseltown relatively healthy. F Jimmy Butler and F Jonathan Kuminga, who each had ankle issues in the preseason, are fit to go for the opener. G Stephen Curry enters his age-38 season with some questions in his supporting cast. He'll need the 36-year-old Butler to remain at an elite level and receive upticks from role players like Kuminga and G Brandin Podziemski to keep the Warriors afloat. They brought in veteran C Al Horford to shore up the middle, and his presence should open up the high-flying Kuminga to play more at the 4 and wing to ignite his offense. Curry averaged 24.5 points per game (PPG) last season, which was a step back from the 26.4 he averaged the season before. Time isn't on this team's side, and the youth will need to shine through.

The Lakers are expected to play the first month without F LeBron James, who has a condition in his lower back called sciatica. This is inflammation or pinching of nerves in the lower back, hip and into the legs. They made a big splash in the offseason acquiring C Deandre Ayton, who will provide an offensive boost underneath. This team will be predicated on 26-year-old G Luka Doncic, who appears to have slimmed down in the offseason, taking over the reins of the offense. Doncic averaged 28.2 PPG after a midseason trade to L.A. That was up from 28.1 PPG with Dallas and included a bit of a slow start as he transitioned to his new team.

Warriors at Lakers picks and predictions

Prediction

Warriors 121, Lakers 113

Moneyline

The Dubs are pretty heavy favorites for a road team in the season opener. I'm not a fan of this ML split. Curry got off to a slow start in '24-25. Albeit, the Warriors blew out Ayton's Portland Trail Blazers by 36 in the opener last season, but Curry had just 18.3 PPG on 41.5% shooting in the first 3 games.

I look for the supreme-defending Butler to be all over Doncic. That should open up Ayton underneath. He averaged 14.4 points, 10.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists last season. I look for DEANDRE AYTON OVER 25.5 POINTS+REBOUNDS+ASSISTS (-115) to clear.

Against the spread

I'll take the WARRIORS -2.5 (-115). They're -150 favorites on the road with a tiny spread to cover the book's you-know-whats.

Over/Under

The last 6 meetings between the teams have gone Over. There have been some considerable changes on the Lakers' side, but this is a very hittable number.

Give me the OVER 225.5 (-115).
