A famed chess grandmaster who went viral for winning games while blindfolded has died.

The Charlotte Chess Center announced the death of 29-year-old Daniel Naroditsky on Monday. In a statement, Naroditsky’s family said his death was “unexpected.”

“Daniel was a talented chess player, commentator and educator and a cherished member of the chess community, admired and respected by fans and players around the world,” the statement said. “He was also a loving son and brother and a loyal friend to many.”

Cause of death was not disclosed. Naroditsky, a Stanford graduate who began winning major tournaments in elementary school, was the 151st-ranked player in the world and the No. 17 player in the United States, according to the International Chess Federation.
