MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis Democrat has introduced a bill in the state General Assembly giving voters the ability to recall elected officials.
HB 1448 was introduced by state Rep. Torrey Harris on Tuesday. Harris said it would let local governments set up recalls elections for mayors, county commissioners, county clerks, sheriffs and school board members among others, under state guidelines.
The issue has come up lately as several Shelby County officials have come under fire, including County Clerk Wanda Halbert, who has survived repeated ouster attempts by other lawmakers since her election in 2018.
Memphis-Shelby School Board members also faced a no-confidence vote from county commissioners last year following a vote to fire the district superintendent.
