ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to remind women how important it is to get checked regularly.

According to Dr. Cheryl Randal-Knatt with CHRISTUS Cabrini, Louisiana is known as a “breast density state,” meaning many women have denser breast tissue. This can make it harder to spot cancer on a standard mammogram.

Dr. Knatt, who is the only breast imaging specialist in the City of Alexandria, said it’s important for doctors to report breast density and sometimes recommend extra tests like an ultrasound or MRI to make sure nothing is missed.

Dr. Knatt also said women should begin yearly mammograms at age 40. However, if there’s a family history of breast cancer or a genetic risk, screenings should start earlier between the ages of 25 and 30.
