Journalist Michael Weiss said on Tuesday that President Donald Trump appears to be "getting kind of tired" of the war in Ukraine, as illustrated by the president's "no-energy" attempts to bully Ukraine into accepting Russia's terms for peace.
During the campaign trail, Trump promised to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours. However, the war continues nearly a year after he was sworn in.
Recently, Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodmyr Zelenskyy to discuss a peace plan. Reports indicate the conversation devolved into a shouting match similar to the one the two world leaders had in the Oval Office earlier this year.
At the meeting, Trump tried to convince Zelenskyy to give up some land that Russia has failed to control to end the war, Weiss said. When that didn't work, Trump appeared to lose interest in continuing the back-and-forth with Zelenskyy.
Weiss discussed the meeting on a new episode of "The Bulkwark Podcast" on Tuesday.
"I'm reading this as yet again, Donald Trump, in spite of his desperation to be crowned prince of peace, king of America, s---dropper extraordinaire on the 'No Kings' protesters, he's getting kind of tired," Weiss said. "He's sort of a no-energy Trump, to be honest. He's trying to bully the Ukrainians, but he's not doing it with the vim and vigor that he did eight months ago."
Russian President Vladimir Putin also appears to be manipulating some of Trump's moves, Weiss said. For instance, Putin phoned Trump shortly after he said he supported selling Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. After that call, Weiss said Trump started sounding "like Putin."
"He has long had a deep abiding affinity for Putin," Weiss said. "Putin is the kind of authoritarian strongman that Donald Trump would like to be."
