HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) -- Vaping has been an issue for years, but what's changing is just how powerful, and assessable the devices are becoming. Horry County School leaders are raising more concerns and looking at different options.

Ryan Poston, principal at St. James High School spoke in Monday night's board meeting.

“We need to start shifting from punishment to prevention. Suspensions, we know, don’t treat addiction,” said. “We need programs that help students understand nicotine dependency and teach refusal skills and media literacy.”

Horry County Schools Spokeswoman, Lisa Bourcier, told News13 that out of the 25 middle and high schools they have experienced 119 tobacco vape incidents, and 75 THC vape incidents.
