Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes filed a lawsuit Tuesday seeking to have Democrat Adelita Grijalva sworn in as Arizona’s newest member of Congress, accusing House Speaker Mike Johnson of unlawfully delaying her seating more than a month after her special election victory.

The lawsuit, filed in Washington on behalf of Grijalva, asks a judge to authorize another official to administer the oath of office if Johnson refuses. Mayes said the delay has left more than 800,000 residents of southern Arizona’s 7th Congressional District without representation.
