Govardhan puja revolves around the story of Lord Krishna, where the villagers of a town were asked to worship the Govardhan mountain instead of Indra, the god of rain. Angered by this, Indra sent a massive storm to destroy the village. To protect the villagers and their cattle, Lord Krishna lifted the entire mountain on his little finger and provided shelter for seven days. As Indra realised Krishna’s power, he accepted defeat and stopped the rain. Since then, people celebrate Govardhan Puja to honour Lord Krishna’s protection and show gratitude to the mountains that sustain the community’s livelihood to date.
