CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - The air is finally getting that crisp fall feeling in the Heartland.

It signals a change in season has arrived, but with it comes another kind of season.

October is RSV Awareness Month, during the time of year when respiratory viruses start picking up.

Amber Grant, nursing supervisor at Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center , said for the moment, case numbers are down.

“September through November, numbers are typically lower, and then starting in December is when we start seeing those numbers climb, and then January-February is usually when they’re at their highest peak.”

Number one on the list of preventative practices is proper handwashing. Grant said hand sanitizer is a good backup for times when no sink is available.
